ASU art students’ works on display in annual College Art Exhibit

ALBANY — While Albany Area Arts Council Executive Director Nicole Williams praised the talent and the art of Albany State University students whose works are the centerpiece of the Arts Council’s 18th annual College Art Exhibition, she admitted that the COVID-induced loss of participation by other regional college students was a concern.

Despite the lack of participation by students outside Albany, there was no lack of interest in the exhibit, unveiled at a reception Thursday night at the Arts Council’s 215 N. Jackson St. gallery. A large crowd came out to support the ASU program and its students whose works will be on display through May 2.

“There is so much talent in the Albany State program, and the staff at the university do a great job of putting the exhibit together,” Williams said. “I would like to see us go back to a format where other regional colleges participate, though. I’d like to see other area college programs share their talent with our patrons. That’s something I think would inspire the Albany State students and generate even more interest in the community.”

Even as the local arts supporters viewed the works of the ASU students at the Arts Council Gallery, the council has begun to accept works for its 24th annual Regional Fine Art Exhibit and Sale, scheduled for June. Artists may submit one or two of their works to albanyartscouncil.org/jas-register/. Cash prizes will be awarded in three categories: photography and digital art, paint and mixed media, as well as sculpture and ceramics.

“This show is important because it’s an opportunity to give all kinds of regional artists a way to get their art out into the world,” Williams said. “It’s also great from my perspective, as I get to see the gradual evolution of art in our community and region. It’s exciting for me to watch our area’s art and artists evolve, to see the changes that are brought on by new ideas, and by new artists coming into the area.”
