ALBANY — Dougherty County Sheriff Terron Hayes has joined a growing number of local and state officials who have endorsed Edward Brown for the state Senate District 12 seat being vacated by long-time Sen. Freddie Powell Sims, who also has endorsed Brown.

Sims announced she was resigning from her seat when her husband, Norman, grew critically ill. A short time later, he passed away.

Hayes said he was throwing his support behind Brown because of the latter’s commitment to public service.

“As Sheriff of Dougherty County, my responsibility has always been to serve, protect, and advocate for the people of this community with integrity and accountability,” the sheriff said. “Over the years, I’ve learned that real leadership is not just about holding a title — it’s about showing up, listening, and delivering results that make people’s lives better. That is why I am proud to endorse Dr. Edward Brown.

“I have had the opportunity to observe Dr. Brown’s work and his commitment to public service, and I can say without hesitation that he brings the kind of thoughtful, solutions-oriented leadership that southwest Georgia needs right now. His background in economics and public policy gives him a unique ability to understand both the challenges facing our communities and the practical steps needed to address them.”

Hayes, who is serving his first four-year term after winning the election to replace outgoing Sheriff Kevin Sproul, said he believes in Brown’s commitment to the people of District 12.

“In law enforcement, we see first-hand how issues like economic instability, lack of opportunity, and limited access to resources can impact public safety,” the sheriff said. “Dr. Brown recognizes that strengthening our communities requires more than short-term fixes — it requires long-term investment in education, work force development, and economic growth. His vision aligns with what I know to be true: Safer communities are built through stronger opportunities.

“What stands out most about Dr. Brown is his respect for people. He listens. He engages. And he approaches every issue with a level of professionalism and care that reflects true public service. These are qualities we need in leadership at every level. I believe Dr. Edward Brown will serve with the same dedication and commitment that the people of Dougherty County deserve. I am proud to support him and encourage others across southwest Georgia to do the same.”
