United Way gives $94 to four area counties

  • The United Way is administering nearly $95,000 in emergency food and shelter funding for 2008, a United Way official says.

ALBANY — Four Southwest Georgia counties can receive funding for emergency food and shelter programs, thanks to a grant the United Way of Southwest Georgia will be administering during 2008, a United Way official said Monday.

The agency will be administering $94,681 in federal funding for Dougherty, Mitchell, Crisp and Worth counties, United Way spokeswoman Krissy Waller said.

Nonprofit organizations in the counties must apply to the United Way by April 16 to get funding, the amount of which will vary from agency to agency, she said. There are several requirements for an agency to receive funding, she said.

Dougherty County was allotted the most funds, with $55,298. Mitchell County was allotted $11,930, Crisp was allotted $14,740 and Worth County was allotted $12,713, according to a United Way news release.

To receive funding, an agency must be a private volunteer nonprofit organization and have demonstrated an ability to run emergency food or shelter programs, among other things, she said. More information about the application process can be obtained by calling Waller at (229) 883-6700, ext. 27.

“They have to call here to get it. There’s an emergency food and shelter board for each county and they decide who gets the funding,” she said.

Funding can be used in several capacities, Waller said, from food provision to rent or utility help.
