Inmate found guilty, but ill

  • Sentencing in the case is scheduled for July 24 at 10:30 a.m., court documents show.

ALBANY — An HIV-positive inmate who authorities say bit a jail guard was found guilty but mentally ill during a bench trial this week, court documents show.

Judge Stephen Goss found Edlencdco Shandar Green guilty of reckless conduct by an HIV infected person and rioting in a penal institution Monday but also found that Green was mentally ill, court documents show.

Goss deferred sentencing until July 24 at 10:30 a.m., court officials said.

Green was an inmate at the Dougherty County Jail when he got in an altercation with Cpl. Chris Leblanc and bit him on the finger on November 17, 2006, according to his arrest warrant.

Originally charged with two counts of reckless conduct by an HIV infected person, two counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and rioting in a penal institution; three of the charges were dismissed, according to court documents.

Green appeared to have been in jail when the incident occurred after being arrested in October 2006 for damaging a mailbox after getting angry with a female friend on Hunter Street, but the details of that case are under seal, according to information on the Dougherty County Clerk of Court’s Web site.
