Crosby qualifies

TIFTON — The last of five candidates who promised to qualify for the special called Senate District 13 primary Aug. 5 did so Thursday.

John D. “Dickie” Crosby of Tifton, a senior judge and former Superior Court judge from 1980-2000 in the Tifton Judicial Circuit, filed qualifying documents Thursday at the Georgia Secretary of State’s Tifton office, his wife and office personnel confirmed.

Crosby, 68, will join Lee County candidates Wally Roberts and Bob Usry, Ocilla candidate Horace Hudgins and fellow Tifton candidate Rusty Simpson on the Aug. 5 special called primary ballot.

Secretary of State Karen Handel called the special primary after incumbent Sen. Joseph Carter, R-Tifton, withdrew his candidacy after the regular qualifying period but before the July 15 primary.

Qualifying for the special primary ends at 12 p.m. today.

If none of the five candidates receives greater than 50 percent of votes in the Aug. 5 primary, a runoff will be held.

Only voters who cast ballots in the July 15 Republican primary or did not vote are eligible to vote in the special primary.

Senate District 13 covers Lee, Crisp, Worth, Turner, Irwin, Tift, Ben Hill and part of Wilcox counties.
