Police arrest shooting victim

  • Police are looking for three vehicles in connection with a Sunday shooting.

ALBANY — A man shot by unknown assailants Sunday on Gillespie Avenue was jailed Monday on other charges, police said.

Carlos Vondrique Clayton, 20, of Leesburg was booked in the Dougherty County Jail Monday on three counts of aggravated assault, according to jail records.

Witnesses told Albany Police that Clayton and others were putting up a basketball goal around the 1500 block of Gillespie Avenue around 8 p.m. Sunday, when suspects in four vehicles stopped and began throwing sticks and bottles at them, then started shooting.

According to witness reports, five or six shots were fired and Clayton was shot in the back as he ran.

He was hospitalized Sunday, but arrested Monday on three outstanding warrants for aggravated assault stemming from a June 7 fight, according to APD Media Manager Phyllis Banks.

Police have no detailed descriptions of the suspects in Clayton’s shooting, but are looking for a blue Chevy Blazer with chrome rims, a gold Ford Expedition and a green Chevy Avalanche in connection with the incident, Banks said in a statement.

A fourth vehicle, a maroon Ford Crown Victoria, has been located, the statement said.

Anyone with information on the suspects or the vehicles should call Albany Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS or the Albany Police Department at (229) 431-2100.
