Byne Christian searches for its new headmaster

  • Enrollment holds steady for Byne Christian School as the search for a new headmaster continues.

ALBANY — The hunt is on for a new headmaster at Byne Christian School.

John Davis, headmaster since 2006, resigned in June to accept a similar position in South Carolina.

Several candidates have been interviewed and more will meet with school officials this week, according to school board chairman Scott Satterfield.

Satterfield said the board is looking for someone with headmaster experience at a Christian school, and “someone with impeccable integrity.”

“We will continue searching until we find the right person,” Satterfield said. “We have no tight deadline on when that will be. If we don’t feel that it is the person God has in mind for us, we’ll keep searching.”

Assistant director Suzan Rewis has taken charge in the interim.

According to Rewis, enrollment has remained nearly the same as last year with 161 students, and all teaching and coaching positions are filled. The school also now has an official guidance coordinator to advise college-bound students on admission and scholarship processes.

Rewis, a 26-year Byne employee, said the school year started smoothly even in the absence of a headmaster.

“I’ve had tremendous teacher support,” she said, “and I could not ask for a better staff.”

Last year’s enrollment was 170, according to Rewis, and the school would ideally like to have as many as 275-300 students.

“We’d love to have as many students as God chooses to send us. We believe in excellence in academics, and spiritual and emotional growth, to help each student become what God intends for them to be,” she said.
