ALBANY — Mrs. Bessie Anderson, 86 of Albany died on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday July 26, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Charles Jacob Breland

ALBANY — The funeral service of Charles Jacob Breland, 70, of Albany, GA who died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. at Life Christian Center International. Pastor Stan Glass will officiate.

A native of Charleston, SC, Mr. Breland had resided in Cottageville, SC before moving to Albany, GA ten years ago. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed with and retired from the Port Authority. He was preceded in death by a son, Bernard Hartwell Breland and a daughter, Matilda Mae Hallman.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Elaine Ballinger of Leesburg, GA, two sons, Charles Wayne Breland of Valdosta, GA and Donald Dwayne Breland and his wife, Tara of Cottageville, SC, a brother, Herbert Breland and a sister, Rose Mary Adam both of Walterboro, SC seven grandchildren, Keith Breland, Justin Breland, Ashley Brooke Ammons, Amber Rene’ Wisener, Corey Ballinger, Tyler Tritan Breland and Allison Victory Breland.

Visitation will be held today from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Life Christian Center International

Benjamin Paul Perkins

ALBANY — Dr. Benjamin Paul Perkins, 74, of 604 S Mckinley St. died Thursday, July y 24, 2008, at Palmyra Nursing Home, Inc.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at Riverside Cemetery. Pastor Darrell Leggett will officiate. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Dr. Benjamin Paul Perkins, Sr. educator and writer on religious subjects was born in Albany, in 1934. He received his B.S. from Albany State College (University), his M.S. from Forth Valley State College (University) and his Honorary Doctorate from Northgate Bible College, Seattle. He held a certificate from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago.

Dr. Perkins frequently contributed to magazines and newspapers and was active in many civic, professional and religious groups. He was author of Black Christians’ Tragedies( and Analysis of Black Youth and Their Church) published in 1972.

As an educator in the Dougherty County School System, he served in several capacities; Special Education, Science and Math Teacher, Director of Student activities, Chairman of Mathematics Department, Teacher of the Year in 1969/1970 (Carver Middle School) and Dougherty County Teacher of the Year. He served as Assistant Principal (Carver Middle School). He was certified in Administration from Valdosta State University. Dr. Perkins was a member and Elder of C.K. Smith Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as Christian Education Leader, Vacation Bible School Director, and attended several conference.

Relatives: wife, Mary W. Perkins of Albany, Son Benjamin P Perkins II (Cassandra), grandson Benjamin P Perkins III of Lawrenceville, three sisters-in-laws, Betty W. Parker, Ocie W Troutman (Ellis), Grace W. Ellerson (Jules) of Albany; several nieces and nephews.

Ethel Blitch Wright

ALBANY — Mrs. Ethel Blitch Wright died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral service will be Saturday July 26, 2008, 11 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern with interment in Floral Memory Gardens. Rev. Chip Gresham officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday morning at 10 until funeral hour.

Born May 25, 1916 in Cairo to Albert Sydney and Edith Robison Blitch the family moved to Pelham and later to Miami, FL where she met and married William David Wright. Mrs. Wright was employed for 28 years by Burdines Department Store. Her field was cosmetics and opened and managed to cosmetics and drug department in both Dadeland and Westland until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and was a volunteer at Palmyra Medical Center for 24 years where she recognized in 1988 as an Outstanding Guest Relations Ambassador.

Mrs. Wright was a member of the Thronateeska Chapter of the D.A.R. for 21 years and served as Chaplin and Vice Regent wand was the recipient of the Community Service Award in 2001 for her dedicated service to Palmyra Medical Center.

Survivors include her daughter Patricia Martins, Albany; grandchildren, Paul Martins and his wife Cindy, Leesburg, daughter Penny Alligood and her husband Allen; great grandchildren, Haley Martins, Eleanor and Nathan Alligood; sister Virginia Ingebrigtsen, Albany and brother James Blitch and his wife Joyce, Arcadia, FL.

The family received friends Friday 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kimbrell-Stern and will be at the residence of Mrs. Pat Martins, 3202 Autumn Ave.
