Mae Della Garrett

ALBANY — Mae Della Garrett, 78, of 1114 E. Roosevelt Ave., died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Palmyra Nursing Home.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 at New St. Stephens Baptist Church, with the Rev. James C. Blue officiating. Burial will follow in Mill Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Stewart County.

Mrs. Garrett was born on May 9, 1930 to the late Peter and Della White Henley in Georgetown, GA. She received her practical nursing degree in 1955 in Columbus, GA.

She worked for Hansel and Gretel kindergarten for “Momma Ruth”, where she was known as “Momma Garrett”. She then ran a home day care center for several years taking care of children and people of all ages. She was a member of New St. Stephens Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary and Sunday School Teacher of the beginning class for over 25 years.

Survivors include her husband, Augusta Garrett of Albany; a daughter, Rev., Dr. Linda Garrett of Albany; two granddaughters, Rosalyn Renee Morris and Erica Garrett Morris of Lithonia; six sisters-in-law, Luvenia McClendon, Williette Barnes and Lillie Mae Prince of Hartford, CT, Bernadette Owens of Leesburg, Lida Agueel of Birmingham, AL, and Earnestine Henley of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law, Patterson Garrett of Sarasota, FL; and a special niece, Shirley Bowman Wise of Jamaica Queens, NY.

Lois Wood Glass

ALBANY — Lois Wood Glass, 89, of Albany died Saturday, August 2, 2008.

Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Kimbrell-Stern, with interment to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, (Sunday) at Kimbrell-Stern. Rev. Mike McAfee will officiate.

A native of Pike County AL, Mrs. Glass has lived in Albany since 1946. She was a member of the Hawk Sunday School Class and First United Methodist Church since 1946. She was a member of the Garden Club. She loved her family greatly and they loved her, the same in return. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Kenneth Glass Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Harriett Owens of Albany, and Gale Baugh and her husband Jock of Atlanta; her son, Kenneth Glass Jr. and his wife Linda of Florence, AL; six grandchildren, Melanie Braswell of Albany, Shannon Braswell Williams of Chattanooga TN, Candice Baugh of Brooklyn, NY, Claudia Baugh Tillman of Atlanta, Jason Owens of Charleston SC, and Jordan Glass of Montgomery AL; three great-grandchildren, Tyler York, Lindsey Williams, and Sullivan Tillman; and a host of nieces and nephews.

James Harrison Griggs

ALBANY — The memorial service of James (Jim) Harrison Griggs, 65, who died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery with Military Honors, the Rev. Billy Hanna will officiate.

A native of Pike Co., AL, Mr. Griggs grew up in Miami, FL, and had resided in Albany, GA, since 1973. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Griggs of Albany, GA; two sons, James Harrison (Tripper) Griggs, II and his wife Tonya of Italy and James (Jamie) Porter Griggs of Chicago, IL; a stepdaughter, Shonna Thomas of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; a brother, Charles Griggs and his wife, Gail of Thomasville, GA; a sister, Barbara Wawryznowicz of Mobile, AL; two grandchildren, Cole Griggs and Peyton Griggs; and five step-grandchildren, Josh Thomas, Kelley Thomas, Hannah Thomas, Jared Garardin and Jordan Garardin.

Mary Nichols

SYLVESTER — Mary Nichols, 93, of 801 N. Washington St., Sylvester, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Shepard Memorial Garden, both in Sylvester. The Rev. Lester Knox officiating.

Born on March 28, 1915 in Marion County, GA, Ms. Nichols was educated in the Marion County Public School System. She was a farmer helper and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Mildred Nichols of Chicago, IL, Juanita Murph of Orangeburg, SC, Helen Carter and Marilyn Fulton, both of Sylvester, and Cassie Clark of Albany; four sons, Johnnie Frank Nichols of Atlantic City, NJ, Robert Hardy of Palm Bay, FL, Bennie Nichols of Decatur, Wayne Nichols of Seattle, WA; a sister, Melba Lucas of Sylvester; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
