‘Africa Live’ exhibit opens Monday

  • The Albany Area Arts Council’s latest display documents a 2007 mission trip to Africa.

ALBANY — The photo-essay exhibition “African Live” debuts at the Albany Area Arts Council next week.

Starting Monday, the free exhibit will be on display through Aug. 30. It can be viewed 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays at the arts council, which is located at 215 N. Jackson St.

According to Albany Area Arts Council Executive Director Deborah Loehr, “Africa Live” is a collaborative-photo exhibition of Albany sisters Femi Nelaja Anderson and Bummi Nelaja Anderson.

“A 2007 mission-trip to Ghana, Africa, serves as the exhibit’s inspiration,” she said in a recent news release.

The exhibit merges the individual talents of the Albany State University graduates, including the artistic eye of Femi, who owns, Renaissance Art Caf{‘e}, a graphics production firm.

“An artist all her life, Femi concentrates her work in paintings and photography,” Loehr said.

Bummi brings the perspective of her own influences, as well.

“Bummi writes poetry and she is the author of four books,” Loehr said. “She has conducted poetry readings on college campuses, in churches and at cultural centers.”
