ALBANY — Southwest Georgia artists and art lovers are invited to an opening reception for artist David Griffin’s “Thoughts, Memories, & Visions” exhibit at the Albany Area Arts Council Gallery Thursday from 6-8 p.m., an exhibition that is the culmination of a decade’s worth of work.
Griffin is an artist with deep roots in Georgia, where he developed a lifelong passion for creating visual art. Starting with homemade comic books as a child, he explored various media, eventually earning a degree in ceramics from Georgia Southwestern State University. His work now focuses on 2-dimensional mixed media, particularly polyurethane, graphite, and enamel “painted drawings.” With a master’s degree in Contemporary Art History, he continues to draw inspiration from faith-based media and Scripture, constantly evolving his practice to create compelling, textured works.
The pieces in this exhibit comprise five distinct series: “Who I Want to Be When I Grow Up,” “Pawns,” “Tall Tales,” “Visions” and “Stained Glass” paintings. These series capture Griffin’s thoughts on the world and society, memories of his childhood, and visions given by inspiration when reading or meditating on the Bible.
Some of the images are quite simple, having little to do in the way of detail, while others are complex and busier. Each has its own meaning, and very little is superfluous to the works other than occasional marks added to make the image more interesting or dynamic.
After the opening, gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from noon-4 p.m. In-person tours are available outside gallery hours by appointment. The exhibit will run through Sept. 19.
