MICHAEL FERGUSON II: Forgive me … Elections do have consequences

After the election, I advised everyone to “be still,” and I followed my own advice. Now I am better prepared to address the implications of our nation’s choice for president.

The weight of this decision is not lost on me, nor is the complexity of our political system. As a veteran, I hold a deep respect for the structures that uphold our democracy. It is within these structures that the true power of our nation resides, balancing the authority of the presidency with the judiciary and legislature.

This administration is testing everything, but what remains will be unshakable. I often reflect on my ancestors’ heritage and their contributions to our nation’s global standing. This perspective aligns with the concept of faith as described in Hebrews 11. Without the outlined faith, you can’t please God.

The right to vote within the African American community is often viewed as sacred due to the cost paid through the blood and sweat of those unsung heroes to secure it. The right to vote within the African American community is deeply rooted in the quest for self-governance. During the periods of Reconstruction, African Americans excelled in politics and the establishment of cities, until the oppressive laws of Jim Crow began to dismantle these achievements and restrict their rights.

We are being revisited with this type of voter suppression as we speak.

We recently had a special election for Ward VI commissioner in our city, and the turnout was dismal. Six percent of registered voters turned out to vote. The runoff is scheduled for Tuesday. Exercise your right to vote. Elections have consequences.

It must be stated that I am not one who likes to invoke fear to compel individuals to act. The nature of fear is control and is often used to manipulate. I would rather compel you to do what is in your best interest because you value your present and future.

The fallout from the new administration has been profound, particularly in areas such as DOGE job terminations and budget cuts across the spectrum of public services. These decisions have sparked widespread debate and concern among the populace, as the implications for social welfare, education and health care become increasingly evident.

The announcement of tariffs will influence the global economy. Many of those who voted for the new administration rode in on the wave of illegal immigration enforcement and getting control of the border. The unanticipated consequences of funding cuts in areas that effect their “kitchen table” issues have begun to create what is being reported as a “rural recession”.

The rural recession has emerged as a significant concern for many communities. As funding cuts take their toll, rural areas are facing unique challenges. Local businesses are struggling to stay afloat, agricultural sectors are hit hard, and essential services are dwindling. The ripple effect of these austerity measures has left many families grappling with financial instability.

In addition, health care facilities in remote areas are experiencing shortages, educational institutions are under-resourced, and social programs designed to support vulnerable populations are being scaled back. This economic downturn is not just about numbers and statistics; it is about the livelihoods and well-being of countless individuals whose lives are intrinsically linked to the support structures that are now under threat.

As the rural recession deepens, it is becoming increasingly clear that elections have unexpected consequences as well.

The actions of the new administration will inevitably have far-reaching consequences for families, friends, and local employers, all of whom will be faced with tough decisions regarding financial stability. Whether directly impacted by job terminations or indirectly affected by the economic ripple effects, the reading audience will feel the ramifications of these policies in various aspects of their daily lives. As communities navigate these challenging times, the importance of coming together and supporting one another will be paramount. 

In the spirit of the black colloquial language, “It’s about to get real.”

My faith in a sovereign God brings me peace during challenging times, and I encourage others to seek that same peace.

I asked for forgiveness in the title of this essay because so many of you in the community have encouraged me to keep sharing through this venue because you look forward to my contributions and were disappointed at my silence. My silence wasn’t intentional; however, your encouragement speaks volumes.
