LEESBURG — A man on a bicycle died after he was struck by a vehicle early Monday in Lee County, with the driver of the vehicle facing charges unrelated to the accident, officials from the Georgia State Patrol said.

Trooper Robert Corvin with Post No. 40 in Albany said the accident occurred on U.S. 19 in the left-hand lane roughly a mile south from Sandy Beach Road at around 5:45 a.m. when a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass being driven by Dontrell Myers, 25, and traveling northward struck Marvin Ross, 69, as he was traveling on a bicycle in an unknown direction.

Corvin said Ross hit the hood and windshield of the car before landing on the roadway. The vehicle traveled more than 100 feet before coming to a stop in the left-hand lane of the roadway. Ross was pronounced dead at the scene, Corvin said.

Investigation is pending as to whether Ross was under the influence at the time of the accident. Myers faces charges of driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana, and is not considered at fault in the accident, Corvin said.
