ALBANY — Albany police have charged two men, one of whom was shot Monday afternoon, with firearms and aggravated assault charges. APD has also issued firearms and assault warrants for a third man they were seeking Tuesday.

Phyllis Banks, a spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said Tuesday that Russell Haynes, 32, who was shot in the abdomen during a scuffle Monday around 3 p.m., had been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and drug charges.

Nigel Shorter, 23, was charged with aggravated assault (party to a crime), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence. He was being held in the Dougherty County Jail Tuesday.

At large Tuesday was the third suspect in the shooting case, identified as Jamarious Wright, who is in his early 20s. Detectives with the APD Criminal Investigations Bureau and the Albany Gang Unit have issued warrants against Wright for charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating Wright.

According to Banks, Wright and Shorter were inside an 1106 Avalon Ave. residence when Haynes arrived. She said detectives believe Wright and Shorter were armed.

Banks said the initial investigation revealed that Haynes confronted a man at 1106 Avalon Ave. who Haynes believed to be a suspect in a robbery in which Haynes was the victim. Haynes, who police said was armed, got into a scuffle with the man. During that scuffle, Banks said, Haynes was shot in the abdomen.

Police are asking that anyone with information on Wright’s whereabouts call the police department or contact Crime Stoppers at (229) 436-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and can be in line for a reward if the tip leads to an arrest.
