Monroe track & field team take titles
Tornadoes, Lady Tornadoes takes top honors
By Chauntel Powell
ALBANY — Monroe High School earned a sweep Saturday as both the boys and girls track & field boys teams won titles at the L.C. Smith/Winfred Benson Relays at Hugh Mills Stadium.
The Lady Tornadoes captured top honors with 184 points, followed by second-place Westover with 99. Albany High finished fourth with 57 points.
The Monroe boys also took top honors, finishing with 115 points. Tift County came in second with 90.5 points, followed by Lee County with 64.5.
Jada Hunt of Monroe finished as the overall point winner for the girls, scoring 26 points. Jahari Williams, also of Monroe, was next with 25, followed by Albany’s Jakaela Dungee and Westover’s Bryshea Jackson with 22 apeice.
For the boys, Robert Grooms finished with 20 points for Lee County as did Monroe’s Reshawn Robinson of Monroe and Clifford Russell of Pelham.
The Westover Lady Patriots got off to a very strong start and racked up half of their points in the field events. Tianna Campbell and Jackson finished second and third respectively in the long jump, while Alexandra Potts picked up points after tying for second in the pole vault. The Lady Patriots’ 49 points after five events put them in first.
Deaundria Anderson and Naila Harris finished first and second respectively in the 800, and Williams finished first in the 100- and 200-meter dash. The Lady Tornados were tied at 76 with Westover after 10 events before taking the lead for good. Monroe head coach Billy Glanton said the inclimate weather played a part in falling behind in the field events.
“I felt ok about it. I actually wasn’t upset about it because our girls did about what we expected them to do,” he said. “We had a [personal record] in the shot put and won the discus. We didn’t do well in the long jump, which is kinda expected with all the rain and it being a little wet out here.”
Westover head coach Octavia Jones liked what he saw in the field events and said in order for them to have a shot, they’ll have to consistently score high in that area.
“Everybody knows what cards Monroe holds,” he said. “They’re the team to beat, they’re the top team to beat and once they get on the track, that’s when they start to dominate. So we’ve just got to make sure we have a good showing on the field so that when we get on the track we can try to catch up to them.”
As far as the boys, Jones said they’re extremely young and inexperienced overall and the few seniors they do have are coming off injuries. He added that they’ll continue working to find their way as region approaches.
Despite the win, Glanton said he didn’t get to see all his boys had to offer. He said several where absent and the weather caused him to sit a few athletes. What he was able to see pleased him.
“The events that we are competing in, we’re performing pretty well,” he said.
After a solid showing last season, the young Albany High girls team had some momentum coming into this season. Head coach Jessica Thomas said right now due to injuries, they’re still a work in progress. But what they were able to accomplish last season should help them as region approaches.
“They have the experience and know what it takes to get there,” she said.
She noted that the boys are improving at a steady clip in both track & field events.
“They’re progressing how I want them to progress,” she said. “They’re applying the things that they’ve been taught to improve their times. I did see that today. So overall today, I saw much improvement and I’m pleased with that.”
