Lee County baseball tops Colquitt County

The Lee County baseball team defeated Colquitt County 7-1 Tuesday night in a Region 1-AAAAAA contest. The Trojans, who have already clinched the region title and the top seed, got a strong pitching performance from Tyler Goff. The senior earned the victory, while Andrew Wingate earned the save.

The Trojans had nine hits in the game. Josh Hatcher went 3 for 4 with a homer and a pair of RBIs. Jonathan Logsdon went 2 for 2, while Landon Cooper, Brenton Phillips and Tyler McConnell each finished with a hit. Tyler Simon hit his third homer of the year.

Lee County will play host to Tift County in its regular-season finale. The game is scheduled for Friday, but it could be moved to Thursday due to the potential of rain.

Darton baseball beat West Georgia Tech

The Darton State College baseball team defeated West Georgia Tech 11-1 in a conference game on Tuesday. Sam Goberdhan earned the victory, going six innings and allowing just three hits while striking out seven.

Mike Huggins led the offense, going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Denzell Gowdy went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Cody Ilgenfritz had a triple and three RBIs.

GHSA votes to allow spring football games

Georgia High School Association football teams will be allowed to play a spring game against another school starting in 2017, the GHSA decided during Monday’s executive committee meeting. Teams can play a spring game in place of their last (10th) practice of spring.

In other news, the GHSA voted to allow state quarterfinal games to return to high school gyms.

Also, the executive committe voted to bring back slow-pitch softball. It was brought back as a varsity-only state-championship sport beginning in the spring of 2017 with one classification broken into four designated areas. Girls will be allowed to play fast pitch (fall) and slow pitch (spring).

Ogbah set to visit Falcons

Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, one of the most prolific pass rushers in the draft, is set to visit the Atlanta Falcons less than 10 days before the draft, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.

Ogbah, 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, had 28 sacks in three seasons with the Cowboys. He played at George Bush High in Houston. He also has a visit lined up with the Carolina Panthers, who have the 30th pick.

The Falcons hold the 17th pick in the draft and possibly could trade back in the draft and get Ogbah, who is the seventh rated defensive in the draft, according to NFLdraftscout.com. He’s rated behind Ohio State’s Joey Bosa, Oregon’s DeForest Buckner, Clemson’s Shaq Lawson, Eastern Kentucky’s Noah Spence, Clemson Kevin Dodd and Florida’s Jonathan Bullard.

Baconton Charter baseball advances to region title game

Baconton Charter beat Pataula Charter 10-0 in five innings on Monday to advance to Wednesday’s Region 1-A title game. The Blazers will play host to the winner of the Miller County-Terrell County winner Wednesday at 2 p.m.

A victory in the region title game would earn the Blazers an automatic berth in the Class A public school state baseball playoffs that begin next week.

Brantley Morgan earned the victory, allowing just two hits and striking out six.

Morgan, Brooks Pinson and Taber Raley each had two hits to lead the offense.

Reader’s Cup Golf Tournament May 16

The fifth annual Reader’s Cup Golf Tournament will be help May 16 at the River Pointe Golf Course. Registration begins at 11 a.m., lunch at 11:30 a.m. followed by a shot gun start at 12:30 p.m. The format will be a four-person scramble.

The $60 entry fee includes golf and range, prizes, lunch, beverages (tea/coffee) and snacks at award ceremony.

Crawford wins Sixth Man honor for third time

For a record third time, Clippers guard Jamal Crawford won the NBA Sixth Man Award.

The 36-year-old Crawford re-established the record for the oldest winner. He was previously the oldest to win the award (34) two years ago.

Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala finished second and received 33 first-place votes to 51 for Crawford.

Crawford came off the bench in 74 of his 79 appearances and averaged 14.2 points and 2.3 assists in 26.9 minutes in all games, helping the Clippers (53-29) post their fourth straight 50-win season. He recorded 33 games with 15 or more points off the bench, third most in the NBA behind the Denver Nuggets’ Will Barton (38) and the New Orleans Pelicans’ Ryan Anderson (36).

Crawford had 341 total points from a panel of 130 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Iguodala finished second with 288 points (33 first-place votes), and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Enes Kanter was third with 182 points (19 first-place votes).

Players are awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote. To be eligible for the award, players had to have come off the bench in more games than they started.

As a starter, Crawford scored at least 30 points in four of five games. Crawford also ranked second in the NBA in free throw percentage (90.4).
