Wesley Cup Golf Tournament this weekend

The 13th annual John Wesley Golf Tournament to benefit Student Ministries will be held Friday and Saturday, April 29-30 at Grand Island Country Club.

A banquet will be held Friday night with a barbecue buffet catered by Riverfront Barbecue. Retired Jekyll Island Golf Pro Johnny Paulk will be the keynote speaker. Golf fans know Paulk’s voice. He is the public address on the 18th green at the Masters at the Augusta National.

The proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit Student Ministries, an organization dedicated to mentoring and sharing Jesus Christ to middle and high school students. It was founded by Flynn Bridges.

The tournament started off as a challenge between two Methodist churches, Porterfield UMC and Albany First UMC. It spread to other Methodist churches in the area, then expanded to all Christian churches.

The tournament begins Friday with the individual round starting at 2 p.m., followed by the banquet at 7 p.m. Saturday’s festivities begin with a devotional breakfast at 6:45 a.m. followed by the church team competition at 8 a.m.

For those who want to participate in just the Friday golf and dinner, the price is $50 per person and an extra $15 for a dinner guest. Friday’s format is a two-person scramble. For Saturday’s breakfast and golf tournament, the price is $50 and for both days, a total of $100. For more information, contact Corr at (229) 881-0628 or Sheila Urick at (229) 449-4692.

An auction will be held on Saturday morning with items to bid including a golf weekend for two at Jekyll Island, a four-day Mountain Home vacation and a round of golf at a private plantation. Hole-in-one prizes on par 3s on Saturday include a $10,000 hole-in-one, vehicle from Autoland and closest to the pin on par 3 on Saturday with a chance to shoot for $1 million dollars.

Terrell County baseball earns state playoff berth

A pair of victories this week has helped Terrell Academy earn a trip to the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class AAA state baseball playoffs. The Eagles defeated Tiftarea 4-1 on Monday, then topped Brookwood 6-4 late Wednesday night.

Jared Donalson’s complete-game victory helped the Eagles past Tiftarea. The junior allowed just three hits and struck out seven. Hunter Mathis’ bases-loaded double in the fifth scored three runs to break a 1-all tie.

In the victory over Brookwood, Gabe Carlton inherited a bases loaded jam in the sixth inning of a 4-4 game and was able to set down the Warriors. Carlton then hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to break the tie, then Donalson worked a scoreless seventh to preserve the save.
