On Feb. 13, the Dougherty County Board of Education voted to name Mr. Kenneth Dyer as my successor. Although, I have no authority to name the next Superintendent, I was asked and I did recommend Mr. Kenneth Dyer to fill my job and I will tell you why.

1. Personal: It is very important we don’t backslide with the progress we have made over the last four years. There is always a danger in bringing in an outsider who doesn’t know the organization, the leadership, and community members. To win over this group takes a lot of time. With Mr. Dyer this risk is totally eliminated as he has already earned the respect of these various groups. He has the demeanor to lead and his honesty sets a strong example for our staff and students. He is a compassionate leader, and yet he knows how and when to make the tough decisions for the overall school system.

2. Instruction: Although he has never taught in the classroom, his knowledge of instruction helped push the Charter System process, the College and Career Academy, and the planning of our One-to-One Technology program. Also, along with me, he has had direct input in filling our key positions.

Administering a school system as large and complex as this one requires more than just an education background. The Superintendent must have a skill set which includes management of people and resources, Finance, Public Relations, accessibility and a general knowledge of curriculum. The Superintendent can hire highly qualified curriculum people, such as I did with Dr. Ufot Inyang and Dr. Martha Lynn Parker.

3. Financial: He is the person largely responsible for digging us out of the financial mess we were in at the time that I was hired. Today, as a result of him and his team, we are on sound financial footing, have given a raise to our employees, eliminated furlough days, improved fund balances, and have the full support and respect of the State Department of Education and the Federal Government.

4. Summary: Bottom Line, if you believe in what my leadership has been able to accomplish over the past four years, you will have more of the same with Kenneth Dyer as your Superintendent.

I am convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt he is the right leader for Dougherty County at this time and I ask that you give him the same support you have given me. This will ensure our system will continue to grow and prosper.

David C. “Butch” Mosely has 50 years of education experience. He was named interim school superintendent for the Dougherty County School System in January 2013 and became permanent superintendent in April 2014. He announced in January that he will step down from the position on June 30 because of health and family issues.
