Deerfield-Windsor victorious on road in opener

The start of the 2017 high school football season was a successful one for Deerfield-Windsor, as the Knights went on the road to defeat Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg 26-16.

Quarterback Jack Kimbrel ran for two touchdowns and had a 36-yard scoring pass to Clarke Sullivan in the second quarter. He completed 7 of 8 passes for 118 yards.

Tailback Garrett Jones’ 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter effectively put the game away, putting Deerfield-Windsor up 26-10. He racked up 150 yards on 27 carries.

Deerfield-Windsor hosts Miller County on Friday.

Terrell Academy opened its season in the SECIS Showcase in Montgomery, Ala., beating Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate 27-14 … Westwood also picked up a road victory, beating First Presbyterian Christian of Hinesville 59-6.

Another rainy night

The first weekend of GISA football has been a rainy one in recent years, and Friday’s games were no exception.

The skies opened up in Damascus just as the teams took the field for the start of the Southland-Southwest Georgia game, sending fans under umbrellas and into raincoats. The first quarter was played in a driving rainstorm, and rain came in and out of the picture throughout the night after that.

Things did get a bit slippery for runners trying to maintain ball security, but the condition of Southwest Georgia’s field held up well.

Coming up

The first full week of high school football commences with Thursday’s Corky Kell Classic game at Mercer between Lee County and Mary Persons. The Trojans look to repeat last year’s success in Macon, where it opened the season with a win over Jones County.

Ben Simmons leads Worth County into action for the first time Friday when the Rams host Thomas County Central.

Another intriguing game is slated for Pelham, where the Hornets, coming off a 9-2 season and the GHSA Region 1-1A title, will host a veteran Westover team.

The two charter schools in the Albany area fielding football teams meet Friday, with Baconton hosting Pataula Charter.

Also playing home games will be Deerfield-Windsor (Miller County), Terrell County (Taylor County), Terrell Academy (Brookwood) and Sherwood Christian (Fullington).

On the road wll be Dougherty (at Turner County) and Westwood (at Windsor). Monroe, Mitchell County and Calhoun County are off.
