Breakfield claims Region 1-3A honor

Monroe’s Warren Breakfield has been named the GHSA Region 1-3A Defensive Player of the Year.

Making the first-team offense from Dougherty were Jaylen Joyner, Kiontavious Goodson, Kameron Venisee, Khalid Haines and Anphernee Jordan. Worth County put Malik Dassie, Chavis Marshall, Alec McDonald and Lance Eldridge on the first team offense, while Monroe had Zatarious Anderson and Courtney Perkins.

Making the first-team defense from Dougherty were Gamarcus Freeman and Devin Cooper. Monroe placed Lavorick Welch, Bevin Glanton and Zaquiese Teemer, and Worth County placed Cameron Jackson.

Crisp County’s Jamie Robinson was named Player of the Year. Crisp County’s Brad Harber was named Coach of the Year. Cook’s Darius Cleveland was named Offensive Player of the Year. Special Teams Player of the Year honors went to Adam Posey of Crisp County, and Bobby Griffin of Cook was named Athlete of the Year.

Dougherty tops Terrell County

Carlos Curry scored 20 points Friday as Dougherty topped Terrell County 82-73 in boys basketball action at the U-Save-It Holiday Classic at Westover.

Dralandius Davis also scored 20 points for Dougherty, and Rod Jones added 16 points.

Stewart County edges Randolph-Clay

Stewart County beat Randolph-Clay 73-70 in GHSA Region 1-1A boys basketball action Friday.

Derrick Gorsuch paced Randolph-Clay with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Darreonte Gainer scored 19 points, while Marquavious Watson added 12 points and six assists.

Albany State women top Tuskegee

The Albany State women’s basketball team posted a 62-46 win Thursday over Tuskegee.

The Golden Rams (6-7, 3-2 SIAC) took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter and pulled away in the final six minutes.

Tyra Thompson led Albany State with 11 points, with Achanti Layfield adding 10.

GSW men beat Fort Valley State

Propelled by 50 percent shooting from 3-point range in the first half, the Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball team opened up a 20-point lead before halftime and held off Fort Valley State 70-61 on Thursday evening in Fort Valley.

The Hurricanes won their second consecutive game to improve to 4-1 while Fort Valley State, which had won four of its past five, fell to 6-5.

R.J. Sessions and Quenten Taylor finished with 20 points apiece for GSW.
