ALBANY – A surge in thefts of certain Kia car models has resulted in the Albany Police Department issuing a warning to owners in the area.

Police said that there has been an increase in Kia thefts over the last week. The department had earlier issued a warning about thefts of Kias and Hyundais earlier this month.

“The trends on social media show people how to start these vehicles without the use of a key,” police said in a news release.

The vulnerable Kias are certain models manufactured between 2010 and 2022, according to police.

Owners may help prevent thefts by using The Club steering wheel lock device, police Chief Michael Persley said, or by using a cover for cars.

“I know it’s a hassle putting a car cover on, but who’s going to take the time to pull a car cover off?” he said.

The department advises owners to visit Hutchinson Kia of Albany at 2875 Ledo Road or to call the dealership at (229) 446-4777.
