No. 2 Worth County hits Sumter County, 18-0

SYLVESTER- The No. 2-ranked Worth County Rams celebrated senior day Monday afternoon, but the game didn’t last very long. The Rams beat Sumter County 18-0, and the game ended after two and a half innings.

The win is Worth County’s eighth in a row and the Rams are now 13-2 on the year and 8-0 in region play.

“We hit the ball well and we hit it where they weren’t,” said Worth County Head Coach Will Smith. “And when we did hit it right at them, it was smoked and they had a couple of errors.”

The Rams put five runs on the board in the first inning, then batted around and scored eight runs in the second inning before the Panthers could record an out.  The Rams belted 15 hits in just two innings of work.

In those two innings, Owen Fletcher and Logan Fox had three hits each for the Rams while Avery Kilcrease, Coy Etheredge, and Lalan Ellis smacked two hits each. Fletcher and Luke Smith tripled.

The Panthers made things interesting in the top of the second when they loaded the bases with only one out, but pitcher Rams’ pitcher Owen Fletcher struck out two batters back-to-back to end the threat.

Fletcher started the game and pitched two innings. He gave up one hit, walked two, and struck out four.

Senior right-hander Own Hancock, who will pitch for the University of Mississippi next year,  pitched to the first batter of the third inning. It’s the first time this season the hard-throwing righty has taken the mound for the Rams because of an injury. Grant Jester finished the game on the mound for Worth County.

The Rams are scheduled to play a doubleheader against Sumter County on Friday in Americus. The Rams will be back at Pope Park next Friday when the Dodge County Indians come to town.
