ALBANY — Three students from Dougherty and Lee counties were awarded scholarships for $2,000 each by the Albany Rotary Club on Thursday.
The students — Kathryn Whitley, Michaela Hatcher and Sarah Norton — were chosen through an application process that was available for students at schools in the two counties. The Rotary Club required that the application be handwritten by the students.
A total of 31 applications were submitted for the scholarships with the three students coming out on top according to the decided scoring system.
Whitley is from Lee County High School. She is graduating with a 3.985 grade point average, and said she intends to study neuroscience at Georgia State University.
“My main goal is to eventually get my Ph.D. so that I can do research on Alzheimer’s,” Whitley told the Rotary Club. “My great grandmother was touched by Alzheimer’s, so I just want to be one of those people who are helping to find a cure.”
Norton, from Deerfield-Windsor School, said that she plans to study biology at the University of Georgia in the fall and later go to dental school to become a dentist or an orthodontist.
Michaela Hatcher is from Westover High School. She said she plans to study aerospace engineering at the University of Alabama.
“The reason I chose this major is because when I was younger, I guess I was always more interested in what was beyond Earth than what was here on Earth,” she told the club. “With my major, I want to work for NASA and have some part in space exploration, getting us to Mars and exploring our universe.”
The club said choosing these three students took only one short meeting due to their qualifications.
