Dougherty early voting ends with high numbers

ALBANY — The last day of early voting in Albany was a busy one, as both downtown voting locations were packed on Friday afternoon.

Although the Dougherty County Elections Office will not be able to release the final number of early voters until after officials certify election results, on Friday at around 4:30 p.m., the cumulative number of early votes was 11,013.

Asked if she thought this election was a record for early voter turnout, county Elections Supervisor Ginger Nickerson said, “I think it may have been. We have to wait until we get to the end to see, but as far as memory would serve me, I believe it is. I don’t want to say for certain until we compare the two beside each other.”

She later added, “I’ve been here for 16 years. I think this is one our busier elections that I’ve encountered.”

Not only does the elections office process in-person votes, it also processes mail-out ballots. As of around 4:30 p.m., 2,809 mail-out ballots were processed.

“This is one of those elections that we wish we could see all of the time,” Nickerson said. “I’m glad to see the voters turn out, and I’m hopeful that they’ll turn out for every election like they did for this one.”

The general election is Tuesday.
