ALBANY — Cemeteries in Albany damaged by Hurricane Michael are set to reopen to the public beginning this weekend, officials with the city announced Thursday.

Officials said the majority of the areas at the Oakview and Riverside cemeteries are trafficable. From Saturday until Wednesday, the west gate near the cemetery office will be open to the general public from 7:30 a.m. -5 p.m. with no appointment necessary.

All other gates will remain closed during this time due to the right-of-way debris staging and ongoing debris removal by contractors. Officials said all scheduled burial services over the holiday weekend will take place.

There is still some vegetative debris throughout the cemetery grounds which will be addressed by the city of Albany work crews after the Christmas and New Year holidays. Facilities management personnel are expected to have all remaining pathway maintenance and vegetative debris removal completed in January.

Visitors are asked to be respectful and not to attempt to access or disturb areas which have been secured from public view. For more information on operation hours and specific details, contact the administrative office at (229) 302-1420.
