ALBANY – A free informative luncheon on how women can prevent heart disease is scheduled for Feb. 1 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Albany Technical College’s Kirkland Center.
“Come wearing a red dress and enjoy a heart-healthy light lunch,” Vamella Lovett, director of the Dougherty County Health Department, one of the sponsors of the event, said.
Other sponsors include Albany Tech, Southwest Public Health District, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.-Delta Et Omega chapter and the Albany alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
Lovett said women’s risk factors for heart disease will be discussed during the event. Dr. Charles Ruis, the public health district’s director, will be the keynote speaker.
Data from the Georgia Department of Public Health Office of Health Indicators for Planning shows that the 14-county public health district including Albany saw 142 deaths among women in the district in 2017 due to obstructive heart disease. Twenty of these women were in Dougherty County.
The event is free, but space and food are limited — so participants are asked to register beforehand. Call (229) 638-6424, and press option 4, to register. The deadline to register is Jan. 28.
