Tuesday morning fire razes Albany Family Dollar location

ALBANY – A fire that destroyed a Family Dollar store on South Slappey Boulevard early Tuesday morning is under investigation.

Firefighters with the Albany Fire Department were dispatched to the 211 S. Slappey Boulevard store location at about 1:27 a.m., according to city Public Information Officer Krista Monk.

“When the first crew arrived on scene, they saw heavy smoke and fire on the left side of the building and a partial roof collapse,” Monk said.

The initial crew on the scene began battling the blaze, and a ladder truck was used to apply water from above.

The fire was effectively contained by about 6:45 a.m. with the exception of some hot spots, Monk said, and was completely out later in the morning.

Dougherty County officials provided a backhoe and excavator to assist with extinguishing the blaze.

The building was a total loss, Monk said, and the city has requested the assistance of a state arson investigator.
