Five-star forward Matthew Hurt announced his commitment to Duke during a ceremony at his high school in Rochester, Minn., on Friday afternoon.
The 6-foot-9 Hurt chose the Blue Devils over college basketball’s other bluebloods: Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina.
Sitting with his family on the stage at John Marshall High School, he thanked his family, friends and coaches before reaching under the table and putting on a Duke cap and unzipping his warmup jacket to reveal a Duke blue T-shirt.
The 247Sports composite ranks Hurt as the nation’s No. 2 power forward and the No. 8 player overall in the nation in the Class of 2019. He is known for his long-range shooting abilities.
Hurt finished his high school career as Minnesota’s all-time leading scorer with 3,819 points. In his senior season, he averaged 37.1 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.8 blocks a game. He was named a McDonald’s All-American.
With Hurt’s commitment, Duke now has the nation’s No. 1 Class of 2019. He will join fellow five-star recruits Vernon Carey Jr. and Wendell Moore, along with four-star guard Boogie Ellis in Durham, N.C., this fall.
The Blue Devils are losing freshman stars Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and RJ Barrett to the NBA draft.
