AMERICUS — Sumter Cycling will host “Plains, Trains, and Bike Chains” on Sept. 28, an annual bicycle ride in conjunction with the Plains Peanut Festival in Plains. Participants are expected to come from all over the Southeast to ride their bikes along beautiful Sumter County roads, starting either at Georgia Veterans State Park or in Americus, and arriving in Plains in time for the Plains Peanut Festival.
At the invitation of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park, Sumter Cycling is adding a 100-mile ride option this year to celebrate the upcoming 100th birthday of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The Plains Peanut Festival is held annually the weekend before the Oct. 1 birthday of President Carter, who was born, raised, and continues to live in Plains. After enjoying festivities in Plains, bicycle riders will explore Plains by bike, seeing sites associated with the Carters and stewarded by the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park.
Following activities in Plains, ride participants can ride the SAM Shortline excursion train or shuttles provided by Sumter Cycling back to their starting points. This event is somewhat unique in its combination of bicycle and train rides. Space is limited for this option.
Other participants will choose to increase their mileage by riding their bicycles back. Depending on start and finish locations, participants will ride their bicycles 14, 36, 46, 68, or an even 100 miles in commemoration of the birth of the only U.S. president from Georgia.
Sumter Cycling provides event participants with T-shirts, friendly rest stops, route support, peanut butter ice cream and optional transportation back. For more information on route specifics, mileage options, team riding, ride support and amenities, transportation options, and registration, see sumtercycling.org/plains-trains-bike-chains.
Sumter Cycling envisions safe, fun and accessible cycling for all, and its mission is to promote cycling in Sumter County and neighboring communities, for recreation, transportation, environmental sustainability and tourism. The organization does this by advocating, planning events, promoting bicycle tourism, leading group rides and educating. Learn more at sumtercycling.org.
