ALBANY— None of the area Class A teams earned top honors at the state track meet at Hugh Mills Stadium over the weekend, but there were a number of outstanding individual performances from Pelham, Terrell County, Mitchell County and Baconton Charter that earned medals on the awards stand.
Pelham’s Kenjanai Brown won the state title in the girls’ Class A shot put with a throw of more than 42 feet, five feet longer than her nearest competitor. Teammate Krystian Jones took third place in the same event for the Hornets.
In the boy’s Class A Shot Put, Pelham senior Malik Mango took third place after a foul on his final attempt. Kobil Ferguson from Lincoln County won the shot put with a throw of 50 feet and 7.75 inches — three feet further than Mango’s best. The Hornets also earned points in the shot put when Gary Ervin took eighth place for the Hornets.
Pelham’s Cameron Bailey ran the 800 meter race four seconds faster than he did in the preliminaries on Thursday and finished second behind Hancock Central’s Darius Battle by just over a second.
Pelham speedster Kentravious Mixon raced to a sixth-place finish in the 100 meter and a fifth-place finish in the 200 meter.
Two other Pelham athletes, Cynthia Stokes and Aleena Fuller, each earned a sixth place finish — Stokes in the pole vault and Fuller in the discus.
Mitchell County’s Jamie Lewis took second in the boys’ 100 meter and the 4×100 relay team of Lewis, Marcus Collier, Earl Waters, and Jadakiss Harvey also raced to a second place finish.
