State track meet underway at Hugh Mills Stadium

ALBANY — If you might be wondering about the strong presence of big, yellow school buses all over Albany it is because the state track meet for three classifications of high schools in Georgia is taking place at Hugh Mills Stadium. Schools from all over the state in the GHSA classifications of 1-A public, AAA and AAAA are competing at Hugh Mills Stadium through Saturday for state championships. This includes athletes from Monroe, Dougherty, Westover and other area schools such as Terrell County, Pelham, Mitchell County and more.

Two sessions of preliminary competition were held Thursday, beginning with field events in the morning and track events in the afternoon heat of southwest Georgia. Most of the competitions Thursday were preliminaries to whittle down the field for finals on Friday and Saturday.

In girls field events Thursday morning, Allycia Hill of Terrell County and Aleena Fuller of Pelham were among those who advanced to finals competition in Class A discus throw. Mitchell County’s Gabby White advanced in the long jump. Pelham’s Kenjanai Brown took first in the shot put for Class A and teammate was not far behind, finishing third. Pelham’s Cynthia Stokes took sixth place in the pole vault and Terrell County’s Adrianna Huckaby finished eighth in the triple jump.

In Class AAA, Monroe’s Camielle Milledge took third place in the high jump and Jahanna Jones came in eighth in the shot put. Tieria Malone finished fifth in the triple jump for the Golden Tornadoes and Jahanna Jones was fourth in the discus throw. Mikendy Edwards also finished fourth in the long jump. After the first day of competition, the Monroe girls sit in second place behind Jefferson in team scores.

In Class AAAA field events, Westover’s Janaya Singleton finished fifth in the triple jump and Chastity Pickett came in 13th in the long jump. Mya Troup jumped into 12th place in the high jump.

The afternoon session was boys’ track events that saw Mitchell County’s 4×100 team of Jadakiss Harvey, Marcus Collier, Jamie Lewis and Travionne Taylor win its heat and finish second overall in the preliminaries. In that same event, in AAA, the Monroe team of Kason Jones, Lorranger Russell, Tyrele Scott, and Jason Leroy finished fifth. Westover’s team of Dante Walls, Michael Todd Isler, Dalian Hall and Cameron Bergeron finished 11th in Class AAAA.

Monroe’s Kason Jones finished second in the 400 meter dash and sixth in the 200 meter dash for Class AAA. Malik Davis of Terrell County finished third in that event for Class A.

In the 100 meter dash, Pelham’s Kentravious Mixon took second in the preliminaries, edging out Mitchell County’s Jamie Lewis, who took third. Mixon also finished seventh in the 200 meter dash.

In the hurdles, Westover’s Myles McCoy finished third in the prelims for the 110 meter high hurdles and second in the 300 meter hurdles forClass AAAA. Terrell County’s Eshaun Harvey took fourth and Nehamiah Shanks finished ninth in the 110 meter hurdles. Harvey finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles behind teammate Demarion Latimore who took second in that event..

Pelham’s Cameron Bailey won the 800 meter preliminary in Class A as Terrell County’s Trimyrn Williams finished ninth.

Field events for the boys begin Friday at 9 a.m. and track events for the girls begin at 4 p.m. Friiday. Saturday’s sessions start at 11:15 a.m.
