ALBANY — Marine Depot Maintenance Command recently received the 2018 Marine Corps Ground Safety Award.
Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Shrader, commanding general of Marine Corps Logistics Command, presented the award on behalf of Gen. Robert Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, to the Marines and civilian-Marines of MDMC during a brief ceremony at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany.
The Marine Corps Ground Safety Awards Program provides recognition to commands and individuals for significant contributions and accomplishments in the field of safety, mishap prevention and force preservation.
The command previously won the award in 2014.
“I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication to a safe working environment that you have established,” Shrader said. “Safety just doesn’t happen by accident, it is a culture that must be embraced.”
In addition to the 2018 Ground Safety Award, MDMC’s Production Plant Albany received the Marine Corps Logistics Command Ground Safety Excellence Award for fiscal year 2018.
Col. Eric S. Livingston, commanding officer of MDMC, accepted the awards. After the presentation, Livingston gave credit to the Marines and civilian-Marines for the accomplishment.
“These awards are because of you and your hard work,” Livingston said. “Safety performance is an indicator of the professionalism of an organization, and all of our employees — across the board — approach safety as professionals.”
Livingston also credits the use of innovative technologies, such as the “zero-gravity” arm with reducing workplace injuries.
“The zero-gravity lift reduces ergonomic stressors and directly contributed to a 66% reduction in injuries,” he said.
The ground safety award citation said MDMC’s performance includes a 71% decrease in days away/restricted or transferred rate, and a 41% decrease in total case incident rate from the previous fiscal year.
Livingston had high praise for MDMC’s overall safety efforts.
“Our first-line supervisors and managers have been the catalysts to our culture change,” the colonel said. “Having all of our employees involved in safety is a critical component to our success.”
MDMC is the Marine Corps’ ground combat equipment maintenance depot, with another production plant in Barstow, California.
