DAWSON – The rivalry between Terrell Academy and Deerfield-Windsor delivered excitement Tuesday night, as the Lady Eagles (12-0) snapped a nine-year skid against their arch-rivals with a dominant 62-28 victory. The Deerfield-Windsor boys capped the evening with a 43-29 win, continuing their impressive season at 11-1.

Terrell Academy’s Hadley Webb opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the corner, and moments later, Sally Masters added another three as the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 19-10 first-quarter lead. It wasn’t just outside shooting that kept the Lady Eagles ahead; they dominated the offensive glass, grabbing rebound after rebound and creating multiple second-chance opportunities.

Head Coach Eric Israel urged his team to step up the defensive intensity, moving their 2-1-2 zone closer to midcourt to disrupt Deerfield-Windsor’s Hampton Rushton and Tamia Brown as they tried to push the ball up the floor.

“Get on the ball,” Israel shouted during the second quarter.

The adjustment paid off, as Terrell Academy built a 31-15 halftime lead and extended it to 50-24 by the end of the third quarter.

“We’ve been putting a little more focus on rebounding,” Israel said after the game. “We did a pretty good job with that. With the defense, I have to credit assistant coach Todd Davis because he suggested that we should move closer and create more havoc… and it worked.”

Masters led all scorers with 24 points, while Webb added 18. Harper Coleman led Deerfield-Windsor with nine points.

In the boys’ game, both teams struggled offensively in the opening minutes. Deerfield-Windsor led 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, but Terrell Academy briefly took a 12-9 lead in the second quarter behind two three-pointers from John Mark Irvin and a basket by Jack Douglas.

Deerfield-Windsor’s David Hutchins answered with a three to tie the score, and the Knights never trailed again.

The Knights slowly pulled away in the second half, extending their lead to 35-24 early in the fourth quarter when Hutchins stole the ball and scored on a fast break. Hutchins later drilled a three-pointer from the corner to push the lead to 41-28.

Deerfield-Windsor was led by Lane Sceals with 15 points, while Hutchins added 10. Irvin paced Terrell Academy with 10 points.

The Knights will travel to Valdosta on Friday to face Valwood, while the Lady Eagles head to Douglas to take on Citizens Christian.
