ALBANY — The Dougherty County School Board on Monday voted 6-1 to offer associate superintendent and finance Director Ken Dyer the job as the next superintendent of the DCSS.
Should Dyer accept the position, he will replace outgoing superintendent Butch Mosley who will step down on June 30 because of health and family reasons.
“I am humbled and grateful for the Board’s confidence in me and I will give my best effort to serve the children of Dougherty County,” Dyer said. “Frankly I have mixed emotions right now because I was looking forward to working with Dr. Mosely through the end of next year.”
Prior to Monday’s final vote, board member Robert Youngblood made a motion to launch a search for Mosely’s replacement, but it failed to pass 4-3. The three votes ‘yeas’ were Youngblood, Melissa Strother and Geraldine Hudley.
Board member Milton “June Bug” Griffin then followed with a motion to offer the job to Dyer and it passed 6-1 with Hudley abstaining.
“I have nothing against Mr. Dyer, I think he’s done a fine job,” Youngblood said. “It’s just that this is one of the most important decisions we will make as a board, and I think a search would have been appropriate.”
Mosely, who has been superintendent since January of 2013 and had recommended Dyer earlier in the month, was pleased with the outcome.
“I really don’t think the board could have made a better choice,” Mosely said. “They would be criticized regardless, but Ken Dyer has my full endorsement and support.”
Dyer must still accept the offer, and he and the board will negotiate a salary and other benefits.
According to open.georgia.gov, the DCSS is currently paying Mosely $149,000 per year, while Dyer is paid $129,000.
