Local and state officials, along with AT&T employees, celebrated the expansion of fiber internet connectivity to 2 million businesses and homes with a ribbon-cutting on Friday at the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

ALBANY – AT&T has reached a milestone in connectivity, and the company chose Albany to announce the availability of its fiber service to more than 2 million homes in the state.

Taking part in the Friday celebration held at the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce was the company’s Georgia president, Riley Blount, and state Labor Commissioner Barbara Rivera Holmes.

The milestone represents an investment of nearly $17 million in the state over the previous five years, Blount said.

“The impact it has is not only for the business community, it is also impactful on the community as a whole,” Jana Dyke, president and CEO of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission, said. “AT&T fiber is powerful technology that empowers communities.”

Among those who have benefited from the technology is Mike Gonzalez, founder and CEO of landscaping company Pro Outdoor.

“Running a landscaping company takes many moving parts that require fast communication,” he said. “This allows us to do it quickly and efficiently. Bringing everybody together on the same page is essential. (It) gives businesses like mine the confidence to grow.”

During the program, AT&T held a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the guests along with local city and county elected officials.

“I’m proud to celebrate AT&T’s milestone,” Holmes said. “It matters not just for connectivity. Access to reliable, high-speed internet is vital. Fiber connectivity expands the opportunity for our department to deliver. When Georgia’s connected, Georgia prospers.”
