Jack Hampson homers twice, Terrell Academy beats Southland, 11-2

DAWSON — Terrell Academy kept its postseason hopes alive Wednesday, riding a fast start and a big night from Jack Hampson to an 11-2 victory over Southland Academy.
The Eagles improved their chances of earning a spot in the GIAA Class AAA state playoffs, but their fate now rests on results elsewhere.
“Right now we have to wait and see,” head coach Ashley Walker said. “Dominion Christian is the last team in right now, but this win was big for our chances. They have a doubleheader Friday, and how that turns out could be the deciding factor.”
Terrell wasted little time taking control.
The Eagles broke the game open in the first inning, scoring five runs to seize early momentum. Hunter Green delivered an RBI single to get things started before Hampson launched a two-run homer to center field. Brody Cowart followed with a run-scoring groundout, and Cash Solomon added an RBI single to cap the inning.
“We finally got off to a hot start offensively and were able to put up a big number in the first inning,” Walker said. “We settled in, played comfortable and were able to keep the momentum the entire game.”
Hampson continued to lead the charge, blasting a second home run — a solo shot — in the fifth inning. He finished with two homers and three RBIs to pace the Eagles.
Terrell collected 12 hits in the game, with Hampson, Flint McCullough, Green and Bo Holland each recording two hits.
On the mound, Cowart delivered a complete-game performance, allowing seven hits and two runs — just one earned — over seven innings while striking out eight and walking one.
“We never allowed them to get back into the game and that was key,” Walker said. “We made big pitches and made plays defensively when they threatened. Overall, we have played some good baseball the last couple of games.”
Southland Academy managed 10 hits, with William Webb, Mac McMichael and Jase Peterson each collecting two. Fletcher Taylor and Peterson drove in the Eagles’ two runs.
But Terrell’s early offensive surge proved too much to overcome.
Now, the Eagles turn their attention to the scoreboard.
With the regular season winding down, Terrell Academy will await the final results across the classification to determine whether Wednesday’s win was enough to secure one of the 12 playoff spots — and extend its season.
