Softball Round Up: Worth wins, Westover, Dougherty fall

SYLVESTER — Worth County’s perfect start keeps getting better.

One day after rolling past Baconton Charter, Laurie Pritchard delivered the biggest swing of the Lady Rams’ young season Thursday.

Pritchard blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning and went the distance in the circle as Worth County knocked off Colquitt County 6-3 in Sylvester, improving to 7-0.

The victory capped an impressive two-day stretch after the Lady Rams beat Baconton 12-1 in five innings Wednesday.

Worth County entered that game having not allowed a run all season, opening with five consecutive shutouts. Baconton finally ended the streak, but the Lady Rams had already taken control.

After scoring twice in the first, Worth County erupted for nine runs in the second. Ellasyn Gandy had an RBI double as the Lady Rams cruised to their sixth straight victory.

Colquitt provided a much tougher challenge Thursday.

Worth County took a 1-0 lead in the second before Hallie Thompson’s RBI single tied it in the third.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Worth County struck for five runs. Pritchard provided the big blow, launching a grand slam to center field for a 6-1 lead.

She took care of the rest in the circle, allowing three runs — only one earned — on seven hits over seven innings while striking out eight and walking one.

Kayelee Mathews, Pritchard, Ansley Bartley, Isabelle Hancock, Molly Williford and Anzlee Williams each had a hit.

Worth County has outscored its opponents 57-4 during its 7-0 start and hosts Carver-Columbus on Tuesday.

Westover falls in walk-off thriller

AMERICUS — Westover staged a furious seventh-inning comeback Thursday, only to watch Sumter County answer with one of its own.

The Lady Patriots scored six runs in the top of the seventh to turn a 13-10 deficit into a 16-13 lead. Sumter responded with four in the bottom half, with Tadaisha Aldridge delivering the game-winning RBI single for a 17-16 victory.

Westover collected 17 hits and led 7-1 after three innings. Chamya Astin hit a two-run inside-the-park homer, while Morgan Polite went 4-for-5 with four RBIs.

Savannah Donaldson, Kenndia Miller and Lauren Edwards also had multiple hits for Westover, which stole eight bases.

The Lady Patriots face Bainbridge on Tuesday.

Seminole County tops Dougherty

DONALSONVILLE — Dougherty battled back from a big early deficit but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 14-9 loss to Seminole County on Thursday.

Seminole scored three runs in the first, two in the second and six in the third to build an 11-0 advantage.

Deriyah Gibbs led Dougherty at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jalexi Thomas struck out 10 in 4 2/3 innings of relief.

Seminole County’s K. Causby went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, including an inside-the-park grand slam in the third.

Dougherty returns home Tuesday to face Shaw.
