Lee County baseball game canceled with Valdosta
Today’s Region 1-AAAAAA baseball game between Lee County and Valdosta in Leesburg has been postponed due to the tragic death of Valdosta freshman Colton Shaw during a ninth-grade baseball game Wednesday night at Colquitt County. Shaw was hit in the head in between innings and was airlifted to the Tallahassee. He remained on life support where he passed away on Thursday.
The game will be rescheduled at a later date.
Worth County baseball win fourth straight
Worth County topped Monroe 11-1 Wednesday in four innings at the Paul Eames Sports Complex in Region 1-AAAA baseball action. It was the Rams’ fourth straight victory.
Cody Reddell shut down the Tornadoes, allowing just a run on three hits while striking out four.
Worth finished with seven hits. Denzell Gowdy led the offense, going 2 for 4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Hunter Goodwin went 2 for 2 with an RBI. Aaron Franks finished 1 for 1 with a double and RBI, while Tyler Moore, Jonathan Cirullo, Reddell and Reece Bozeman all had RBIs. Bozeman had two.
Keith Hayes, Napoleon Harris and Dontavious Toomer had Monroe’s three hits.
Albany State softball drops sixth straight
The Albany State Lady Rams were unable to snap their losing streak against the Rollins College Lady Tars on Wednesday. The Lady Rams dropped two road contests, 6-1 and 9-1. With the pair of losses, ASU loses its sixth straight game and falls to 9-15 overall.
In the first game, Albany State scored its only run in the top of the first inning. Ambrionna Atkism recorded a sacrifice bunt to score Malea Maye. Rollins answered with a single run in the second, third and fifth innings. The Lady Tars cushioned their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Tiffany Massey led the Lady Rams with two hits. The team recorded just three hits total and committed three errors.
In the second game, the Lady Rams still struggled to find offense. While Rollins scored two runs apiece in the second and fourth innings and five in the third, Albany State scored its only run in the fifth inning. The game was called due to the eight run-five inning rule.
Maye had two hits as ASU collected four hits and committed three errors.
Albany State will return home Saturday when it hosts SIAC opponent Clark Atlanta University in a three-game series. The two teams will play a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday’s single game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Albany State baseball drops two at Tuskegee
The Albany State Rams rallied in both contests but could not overcome SIAC foe Tuskegee on Wednesday. The Rams dropped a pair of games to the Golden Tigers 6-3 and 9-5. With the losses, ASU falls to 7-25 overall and 4-6 in the SIAC.
In the first game, Tuskegee scored a run in the top of the second inning and two more in the top of the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Albany State continued to go scoreless until the sixth inning when they scored three runs to tie the game.
Ryan Hickox hit a sacrifice to send Allen Hardy home to score ASU’s first run. Hector Carrasquillo followed with a single that sent Jeremy Arrington to the plate. Carrasquillo tied the game when he scored off a balk.
In the seventh inning, Tuskegee took advantage of two Albany State errors to score three runs and regain the lead. The Rams could not score another run in the bottom half of the inning.
Hardy led Albany State with two hits.
In the second game, Tuskegee opened by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Albany State answered with two runs of its own when Arrington hit a two-run homer following Hardy’s triple. In the bottom of the second, ASU tied the game when Nick Bruner hit a single that scored Terrance Worthy.
The Golden Tigers scored another run in the top of the third inning and two more in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 advantage. Ryan Latner belted a single in the bottom of the fourth to score Bruner to close the gap to 6-4.
TU added three more runs in the fifth and seventh innings, and the Golden Rams could only score one more for the rest of the game.
Arrington connected for two hits to lead the team offensively.
Albany State track to host Alice Coachman Invite
The Albany State men’s and women’s track teams will host its annual Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet on April 4. The event will take place at the Robert Cross Track and Field Complex on the ASU campus.
The ACI will begin at 8 a.m. with the hammer throw, which will be followed by the javelin thrown. All other field events will begin at 10:30 a.m. The running events will start at 11:30 a.m.
The track meet is held in honor of legendary Albany State track star Alice Coachman. Coachman became the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she competed in the 1948 Olympic in London. She passed away on July 14, 2014 at the age of 90.
