ALBANY — An Albany man, sentenced Monday to probation, was sent to jail instead after breaking a plate-glass window with his forehead, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office officials say.

Dennis Turner Jr., 18, and his father Dennis Turner Sr. had each received a sentence in Dougherty Superior Court, said Capt. Craig Dodd with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, when shortly after 11 a.m. Turner Jr.’s sister Dylancia, 17, voiced strong objections to the judge’s decision.

Dodd said the senior Turner had pleaded guilty to felony obstruction of an officer and was given a sentence that included six months in jail. According to Dodd, the Turner Jr. was sentenced to probation after his original charge was reduced to a misdemeanor.

“She (Dylancia Turner) began to yell and swear and was very disruptive,” Dodd said. “Deputies attempted to remove her from the courtroom, but then (Turner Jr.) began to struggle with the deputies.”

Turner Jr. seemed to calm down quickly, Dodd said, but as he was leaving the building and walking past the door to Albany Municipal Court, Turner Jr. suddenly slammed his head against a window, shattering the plate glass.

“We’re still trying to make sense of that,” Dodd said.

According to Dodd, Turner Jr. sustained a small cut to the center of his forehead, but blood coming from the wound made it appear worse. After a second struggle with sheriff’s deputies, Turner was subdued and treated by Dougherty County Emergency Medical Services personnel. He was later charged with obstruction of law enforcement and destruction of government property and was taken to the Dougherty County Jail, Dodd said.

The Sheriff’s Office released courthouse security video as well as photos of the incident Tuesday. In the video, Turner Jr., wearing a white shirt and tie, is seen walking down the 2nd floor west hallway after sentencing, then turning a corner just out of view, where Dodd said Turner Jr. struck the window.

As he was brought by deputies back down the hallway, his brother Dylan Turner, 17, can be seen in the background as deputies wrestle him to the floor.

Dodd said video and photos of the incident were being made available to the media in an effort by the Sheriff’s Office to be “upfront and transparent.”

“Transparency is always a good idea,” Dodd said, “especially nowadays, when everything is in the public eye.”

According to Dodd, Dylancia Turner was not charged in the incident, but was ordered by Superior Court Judge Stephen Goss to attend an anger management course.
