Sherwood gets 5 firsts in math contests

ALBANY — Sherwood Christian Academy recently took students to the MathCounts region tournament at Darton and the ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) Math Olympics competition held in LaGrange.

MathCounts is a national tournament sponsored by the Society of Professional Engineers and is geared toward getting students to pursue mathematical and technical careers.

Dallas Ausburn, an eighth-grader at SCA, took the individual first-place award and went on to compete in the state tournament held in Atlanta.

Sherwood Christian Academy’s ACSI Math Olympics team consisted of students from third grade through eighth grade.

Sixteen SCA students placed, with four first-place finishes. The first-place winners were Ariana Ukaonu in third grade, Jacob Casey in sixth grade, Jarrett Kemp in seventh grade and Caleb Thompson in seventh grade.

“SCA believes that in the ‘innovation’ driven economy of today it is more important than ever to prepare our students for careers in the math and science fields,” school spokesperson Amy Parr said. “These sponsoring teachers worked hard with the students to help them achieve their goals in these competitions.

“We are proud of all of our students that were chosen to represent SCA at these two important events and want to give a big congratulations to those students that placed.”

The MathCounts and Math Olympics middle school teams were coached by middle school math teacher Matthew Sheets while the elementary Math Olympics team was coached by elementary school teacher Amy Nobles.
