Gun, 100 rounds in rotary magazine seized

ALBANY, Ga. — A simple traffic stop turned into an earnest drug and weapons bust at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, according to an Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit report.

A driver in a 2002 black Ford F-350 pickup attracted attention because his tag light was out, Drug Unit Maj. Bill Berry said. When the driver tried to avoid the patrol car stop, he got more attention.

“Our agents noticed he threw a couple items from the vehicle as he drove away on Slappey (Boulevard),” Berry said. “There are no routine traffic stops.”

According to Berry, when the agents caught 33-year-old Kevin Denail Harris in the pickup, they seized a GSG .22-caliber pistol with a bullet in the chamber and a rotary magazine that carried 100 rounds in it.

According to websites such as americanrifleman.org, the German Sport Guns pistol can be bought as a semi-automatic. The pistol comes with a 10-round magazine, but 22-round magazines and 110-round drums can be purchased.

Berry agreed that killing people is the only use the gun could possibly have. In light of the recent Connecticut school massacre, he added that it could fit under a coat, be smuggled into a building and used to kill a lot of people in an enclosed space such as a classroom.

“It isn’t a hunting gun,” Berry said. “And think about it: We (drug agents) have 16 shots. He has 100.”

The agents also seized another almost 100 rounds of ammunition, Berry said. The “items” thrown from the pickup turned out to be 78.6 grams of cocaine worth more than $7,000 and about seven grams of marijuana, he added.

Berry said that Harris was charged with trafficking in illegal drugs, possession of a firearm illegally, tampering with evidence, tag light required and booked into Dougherty County Jail. Harris remained in jail at 4 p.m. Friday in lieu of $1,100 bail, according to the jail’s automated answering system.
