Dog attack, wreck among Albany weekend incidents

ALBANY, Ga. — A dog attack and a vehicle wreck resulted in multiple people being sent to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on Sunday, reports from the Albany Police Department show.

The dog attack took place at 223 Morningside Drive, where emergency officials responded to two juveniles being bitten by a pit bull just after 2 p.m. on Sunday. The victims were two brothers, ages 15 and 11, police officials say.

Initial reports said that officers described the 11-year-old’s injuries as severe after the dog had latched on to his head. The narrative of the police report stated that he suffered a deep wound to the left side of his head, with the scalp having been ripped open.

The other victim sustained an injury to his upper right arm after he managed to get the dog off of his brother, the report narrative states.

The report says that further investigation into the incident found that the two brothers — after being told to stay away from the dog — went toward the gate where the dog was located and opened it, which was when the animal attacked the boys.

The dog was contained and taken into custody by Animal Control and is expected to be held at the Humane Society for 10 days, police officials said.

The vehicle wreck, involving a Ford Crown Victoria and a Lexus, took place at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and West Oakridge Drive a little after 7 p.m. on Sunday, police said.

The Crown Victoria was being driven by Breton Nelson, 30, while the Lexus was being driven by Freeta Venisee, 64. A witness told police that Venisee had the light to make a left and Nelson ran the red light. Nelson struck Venisee and the impact caused her car to flip over, APD officials say.

All parties were taken to the hospital for treatment, and Nelson received a citation for a red light violation, police said.

On Monday afternoon, Venisee was listed as being in fair condition while Nelson had since been discharged, a spokeswoman for Phoebe said.
