ALBANY — The Albany State Golden Rams (34-10, 30-3) finished the regular season with a three-game sweep of third-place Edward Waters last week and will now host the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship tournament in Albany beginning Thursday, May 2.

“Nothing is certain right now, except that we are the top seed and Spring Hill is second,” ASU head coach Scot Hemmings said Saturday afternoon.

Hemmings’ Golden Rams swept Edward Waters, 11-1, 5-2, and 12-10 to finish the season. Now it’s time to get to the national tournament.

“We have been focused on winning every game all year and have done a great job,” the coach said. “I told them there is no difference between a tournament game and a regular season game, we are trying to win both. This team is older and more mature, and I feel really good this year with how everyone is playing. We have a lot of momentum after beating the number 21 team in the country and sweeping our last conference series.

“It will be a tough tournament as everyone in there has a chance to win it,” Hemmings continued.

“I am very excited to see these guys perform. We will be ready for Thursday!”

The Golden Rams are led at the plate by senior Jonathan Logsdon who graduated from Lee County. Logsdon has a .488 batting average with six home runs and 52 RBI. He has scored 70 runs.

Brady Davis, a left hander from Brunswick, leads the pitchers on the mound this season. He has compiled a 9-1 record with a 2.73 ERA.

While the teams may not be a sure thing, the timing for the Albany State Golden Rams is.

Albany State will host the eighth-seeded team (likely Kentucky State) at 3 p.m. Thursday at ASU West. The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday morning in a game between the third seed and the sixth seed.

The SIAC website currently lists the top eight in this order:

1) Albany State

2) Spring Hill

3) Edward Waters

4) Savannah State

5) Miles

6) Lane

7) Morehouse

8) Kentucky State

The tournament is a double-elimination tournament. The winner’s bracket will continue at ASU West and the losers bracket will take place at ASU East.
