ALBANY — The interim tag is gone, and for Albany State’s women’s basketball program, that’s more than a title change — it’s a signal of stability after a season that restored belief.

After guiding the Lady Golden Rams to their first winning season in nearly a decade, Todd Triplett has been named Albany State’s head women’s basketball coach, the university announced, with his appointment set to take effect April 1.

Triplett stepped into the role last year following the departure of former coach Akia Stanton and immediately delivered results. Albany State finished 16-12, doubling its win total from the previous season and reaching the SIAC tournament semifinals.

The defining moment came in the conference tournament, when the Lady Golden Rams knocked off top-seeded and nationally ranked Edward Waters — a breakthrough victory that underscored the program’s rapid progress. Albany State’s postseason run ended in heartbreak, however, with a 71-69 loss to Lane on a last-second buzzer-beater.

Still, the foundation had been set.

With a roster featuring six freshmen, Triplett built his team around defensive discipline and accountability. The Lady Golden Rams led the SIAC in defensive rebounding, averaging 26.8 boards per game, and developed a reputation for effort and physical play.

That approach translated beyond the court. Albany State posted a 3.10 team GPA while producing All-SIAC selection Na’Haviya Paxton and All-Freshman Team honoree Sariah Johnson — key pieces in what appears to be a promising core.

“Coach Triplett distinguished himself through his leadership, the progress of the program, and his vision moving forward,” said Albany State athletic director Dr. Kristene Kelly. “He stepped into a challenging situation and created immediate momentum.”

Triplett’s path to Albany includes stops across multiple levels of basketball. He has coached collegiately at Edward Waters and Clark Atlanta, led West Oaks Academy to a state championship at the high school level, and spent time coaching professionally in Mexico. A former professional player in Europe, he brings a broad perspective to player development.

“I’m proud of what our team accomplished this season, and I’m excited about what’s ahead,” Triplett said. “We’re going to continue to grow, compete, and represent Albany State the right way.”

For players like Johnson, the impact was immediate.

“Coach Triplett believed in us from day one and pushed us to be better every day,” she said. “He’s helped set the tone for what this program can be.”
