ASU Gala honorees to be recognized for ‘dedication, support’

ALBANY – Though the event is still a few weeks away, the Albany State University Foundation is working full speed ahead to prepare for its fourth annual Blue and Gold Scholarship Gala, themed “A Night Under the Stars.”

The gala takes place April 6, during Founder’s Day Week at ASU’s West Campus Arena. The evening includes a cocktail reception at 6 p.m. followed by the gala at 7 p.m. The attire is black-tie.

The ASU Foundation will recognize six individuals and one business for their dedication and support to ASU and significant contributions to their respective fields during the gala. The honorees include:

— Trailblazer Award: Pastor Daniel Simmons, Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church;

— Dr. Joseph W. Holley Lifetime Achievement Award: Shirley and Charles Sherrod, Civil Rights Activists, New Communities Inc.;

— Excellence in Education Award: Kenneth Dyer, Superintendent, Dougherty County School System;

— Dr. Joseph W. Holley Lifetime Achievement Award: Shirley and Charles Sherrod, Civil Rights Activists, New Communities Inc.;

— Rising Star Award: Randy Williams and Eric Heyward, Founders and CEOs, Talley & Twine;

— Community Partner of the Year: Molson Coors Beverage Company.

Tickets are $150, and sponsorship opportunities begin at $1,500. Support of this event allows Albany State to provide student scholarships.

The Dougherty County Board of Education will hold two public hearings regarding the proposed conversion of Morningside Elementary School at 120 Sunset Lane to the Morningside Early Childhood Education Center (a pre-kindergarten facility).

The late Charles Sherrod, a civil rights icon in southwest Georgia, will be celebrated as the recipient of the Dr. Joseph W. Holley Lifetime Achievement Award, along with his wife,  Shirley Sherrod at ASU’s Blue and Gold Gala.
