TOM CONNELLY: Recognizing a local hero on Military Appreciation Day

Thursday is Military Appreciation Day in Albany. With Russia, China, and Iran increasingly taking hostile actions against countries that the United States supports in some fashion or is an ally with, it’s only fitting to take some time to thank our fellow Americans who protect this great nation and its people.

We in southwest Georgia are fortunate to have a military installation — Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany — located here. Not only does it play a key role in this country’s defense, it provides employment opportunities and is a key economic contributor in this region.

Concerning the men and women in uniform, it’s been a pleasure to see how far some individuals have come, professionally speaking. One such person that I’ve been particularly impressed with is Maj. Keith Q. Rudolf.

Born in 1982 in Batesville Ind., Rudolf enlisted in the Marines in 2000. He then attended Recruit Training with 2nd Recruit Training Battalion in San Diego and graduated as a private in October 2000. After graduation, he attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and was promoted to private first class upon completion. Subsequent to this, he attended training as a 1391, bulk fuel specialist at Fort Lee, Va., and was promoted to lance corporal.

After being promoted to staff sergeant in 2008, Rudolf earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Park University. After graaduating, he submitted for, and completed, OCS (Officer Candidate School) and received his commission in 2011.

Prior to OCS and TBS (The Basic School) graduation, Rudolf received orders to Combat Logistics Battalion 6 at Camp LeJeune, N.C., to attend Logistics Officer’s Course. There, he served as a motor transportation platoon commander before volunteering to deploy to Camp Shorabak, Afghanistan, in 2013. At this location, he served mainly as the logistics advisor to the Afghan National Army’s 3rd Mobile Strike Force Kandak and liaison officer between inter-service and NATO partner nations. He was promoted to first lieutenant in March 2013.

Following his return from deployment, Rudolf transferred back to CLB 6, where he served as the Transportation Support Company Detachment OIC, until the return of CLB 6 from deployment. At this time, he served as the maintenance services executive officer.

After acceptance of career designation, Rudolf executed orders to Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Va., in August 2014. At this location, he served as aerial delivery project officer, and team lead for Reconnaissance and Amphibious Raids Product Team under the Infantry Weapons System Program Office.

Rudolf was promoted to captain in June 2015. Notable achievements while serving in this role included the finalization and fielding of the Joint Precision Air Drop System, as well as testing and evaluation of the Enhanced Multi-Mission Parachute System.

In August 2017 Rudolf executed orders to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. At this site, he served as the battalion logistics officer. During this time, he took part in exercises Bougainville I, Bougainville II, Bougainville III, and ITX 2-18. After pre-deployment training, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan, as part of the Unit Deployment Program rotation.

After leaving Okinawa, Rudolf accepted orders to transfer to 3rd Marine Regiment in 2019. He served at this time as the assistant regimental logistics officer and regimental maintenance management officer. During this period, he was selected for graduate education at the Naval Postgraduate School.

Rudolf reported as a student in July 2020 for the Logistics Management curriculum at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. In December 2020, he was promoted to major. Following graduation, Rudolf executed orders to Marine Corps Logistics Command-Albany. Currently, Rudolf serves as the military deputy within the Supply Chain Management Center.

Among his personal awards, Rudolf has earned the Good Conduct Medal, with two bronze stars in lieu of a third award; the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, with two gold stars in lieu of third award; as well as the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. In addition to his BS degree, Rudolf earned an MBA in Material Logistics Support Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is married and has five children.
