American Legion Post 30, Auxiliary to host Memorial Day breakfast, sell poppies

ALBANY — The community is invited to join American Legion Post 30 and Auxiliary Unit 30 at 7:45 a.m. Memorial Day, May 27, for a breakfast at Post 30’s 2916 Gillionville Road Legion Hall.
Auxiliary members and Miss Poppy, Lyla Rackley, will distribute bright red poppies in honor of fallen warriors. Special guest Danny James of Gillionville Church will sing patriotic songs.
The poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One hundred percent of all donations go directly to help veterans.
When the American Legion family adopted the poppy as its memorial flower in the early 1920s, the blood-red icon became an enduring symbol of honor for the sacrifices of our veterans from the battlefields of France in World War I to today’s conflicts. The American Legion Auxiliary raises millions of dollars each year distributing poppies throughout the nation, with all of the collected funds going directly to help veterans, active military and their families.
“Wearing the poppy on National Poppy Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and all patriotic holidays is one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors who willingly served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” Auxiliary Unit 30 President Marilyn Fowler said. “We must never forget.”
