ALBANY — Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded on Jan. 13, 1913 by 22 young women studying at Howard University. For 11 decades, Delta has remained steadfast in the pursuit of sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action.

At the founding of the sorority, Delta was one chapter, one sisterhood and was ignited by the passion and purpose of the 22 founders. Today, the sorority boasts more than 1,050 chapters worldwide and remains one sisterhood.

This year, the Albany (GA) Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority joined in the celebration of 111 years.

To commemorate the anniversary, several members of Albany Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. attended the State Cluster in Athens for a celebration of sisterhood with more than 2,000 ladies of Delta from across Georgia, attending training to continue the work of the sorority.

The Albany (GA) Alumnae Chapter has an annual tradition of a Day of Service each January. This year, the chapter broadened its reach by collaborating with Delta Rho, the Albany State University collegiate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and Eta Omicron & Chi Epsilon Chapters of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. in a shared commitment to serve area communities.

Residents in Albany, Cordele, Shellman and Sylvester were served warm soup and given blankets, socks, and hats during the community service project, which extended over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend from Jan. 13-15.
