MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE-ALBANY — Southwest Georgians looking for a fun way to celebrate the Independence Day holiday have one less option as the July 4th holiday arrives.

Officials at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany announced leading up to the holiday that the base’s annual celebration and fireworks display would not be held this year.

“Due to fiscal constraints, fewer vendors, less sponsorships, and declining participation since 2014, I made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel the on-base Independence Day celebration this year,” Col. Matthew McKinney, the commanding officer of MCLB-Albany, said.

McKinney noted that in 2013, the event was cancelled due to federal budget cuts and again in 2020 due to COVID.

“The cost to host this event has continued to increase exponentially over the past several years, and I had to make a tough call on how to best be a steward of our taxpayers’ resources,” he said. “We encourage our active-duty and civilian personnel to enjoy the fireworks celebration in the local community, who so generously supports our military.”

The city of Albany will host its annual July 4th celebration starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The event includes music, food trucks and fireworks, which start at 9 p.m. The event will be held at the Veterans Park Amphitheater and the Albany Civic Center.
