PARROTT — The new Mill Road bridge at Pine Head Creek is scheduled to open Tuesday replacing the 68-year-old bridge that bore a posted weight limit.

The opening is slightly ahead of schedule. When the road closed in October 2023, it was expected to re-open March 21. Traffic was detoured while the old bridge was dismantled and the new one constructed. The bridge is about a mile west of Parrott.

Georgia DOT maintains roads, bridges and other infrastructure on the state highway system. Its Low Impact Bridge Program was developed to replace bridges that primarily are not on the state system, which reduces the number of closed or substandard bridges statewide. The cost of these bridge replacements is kept lower because construction has minimal environmental impact and does not require additional right of way.

Off-site detours during construction and the use of some prefabricated components also lowers the cost and shortens the length of time the road is closed.

The construction contract to replace the bridge at Pine Head Creek is $1.5 million, and the construction contractor is Southern Concrete Construction Co. Inc.
